Virtual reality is an amazing medium in which one can feel ‘present’ within a rendered scene, as though you are really there. It really must be experienced to be fully understood. Unlike other platforms, virtual reality offers what we call ‘true scale’. On traditional displays object scale can only be perceived by what our brains already know about the object and how it is presented relative to other objects. For example, on a screen an elephant might only be an inch high but we know it’s true size based on our experience or when positioned next to another object we are familiar with. In virtual reality no reference points are needed. When you see an elephant in VR it really is as big as you would imagine, literally. The brain doesn’t need to do the math so to speak.
Any object or scene can be constructed in VR allowing the user complete freedom to navigate. Scenes can be constructed from the artists imagination, from existing data such as architectural programs or from the real world itself which can be brought into virtual reality through different technologies. This can allow, for example, a virtual building to be explored as though it were a physical construct; providing true scale and a sense of presence.
Lastly, the importance of presence cannot be understated. When the brain believes it is really there it processes the scene and activities within the scene as ‘experiential’ which is the way the brain was best designed to learn; hands on. Data can now be presented in a new way in which even a caveman could understand.
The FreedomVR team have been working with virtual reality for a number of years. This year, VR is coming to consumers in a big way. This is the time for those in the know to be ahead of the curve and lead the charge. In the last year alone there has been billions of dollars invested in VR. Developers around the world have been preparing for this moment for a long time. It has been an incredible journey and we are excited to share with you what we have learned and just as excited to give you the experience of VR so you can see for yourself what all the fuss is about.
